Rocky Horror at The Pear
This performance is intended for audiences 18+. If you plan to bring yourself or others, please know that you’re going to be seeing an R-rated movie with a group of inebriated people screaming lewd things at a screen and dancing. Enter at your own risk…and get ready for a good time.
Etiquette
Our first goal is to make sure everyone has a good time. The idea of Rocky Horror participation is to have fun, not disrupt the show/film, the following guidelines will help you and the other members of the audience to enjoy the show to the maximum pleasure level. Please ensure that you are conscious of those around you. This is not a family affair, by any stretch of the imagination.
Please use props only when indicated.
No additional props (beyond what is in the kit) are allowed into the theatre.
Everyone wants to hear and see the movie, please keep yelling to the appropriate moments.
Dress
Optional. Whilst some people look good in a dress, others don't. You may find that after a show or two you may like to wear something a little more outrageous, stockings, basque, high heels. You may even become a diehard fan and start to make perfect copies of the costumes worn during the film/show. For now, just wear something casual but remember to adhere to the following 3 step guide regarding clothes that should never be worn to Rocky:
Suits, these are worn only by people who thought they were booking for Phantom of the Opera or Chicago but dialed the wrong number.
Sandals, anoraks or anything remotely connected with the acquisition of British Rail rolling stock serial numbers.
Sweatshirts with a striped design.
Dancing
Although not compulsory, you may find that during The Time Warp you are the only person in the audience not on your feet. By simply following the rule: 'do what it says' you will also be able to participate in this famous dance. For example the phrase “It’s just a jump to the left!” should be danced by jumping to the left. If you want to get up and boogie to the other songs, feel free to do so, remember though The Time Warp is the only dance that has set moves.
Audience Participation
Whether you are watching the film or stage show version of Rocky Horror you will notice that the audience are talking to the screen or actors. Fans have been dressing up, shouting back lines and singing along to the show and movie for 50 years now. Performing casts of fans act out the movie in front of the screen for the love of Rocky, not to make money out of fellow fans.
Audience participation should always be complementary to the show, never just shouting out lines for the hell of it.
The following two responses will get you started in the wonderful world of talk-back:
Brad is referred to as an “Asshole” when his name is mentioned in the dialogue by the Narrator this is the correct response.
Janet on the other hand is referred to as a “Slut” (Don't go shouting out “Slut” and “Asshole” all the times their names are said by other characters or during the songs though, that's never worked and you'll look like an idiot.)
Screening Kit
This movie is all about participation but we also want to make sure the theater isn’t damaged, wrecked, or burned down (under NO circumstances should an open flame ever be used within The Pear). People are absolutely encouraged to dress up and have fun, but there are just a few things we cannot and will not allow and they are listed below along with the items included in the kit, as well as when to use them.
Another thing we ask is to please not throw things at the screen, it’s not new for sure, but it is functional and we want to keep it that way. Besides, throwing things at the screen is pretty much just not cool. WHENEVER YOU ARE ASKED TO THROW SOMETHING, PLEASE DIRECT THEM TO THE BASKETS AT THE SIDE OF THE STAGE
Here’s your play-by-play of when to use your props in your kit:
Balloon
When to use: During the song Science Fiction Double Feature, the move When Worlds Collide is mentioned – pop the balloon at this time.
Glow Stick
When to use: During the song There’s a Light (Over at the Frankenstein Place), while the “There’s a Light” chorus is playing. Do this during the chorus and when they say “in the darkness” lower it.
Noisemakers
When to use: During the “Lab” scene, when the Transylvanian Guests use their noisemakers at the end of the creation speech.
Toilet Paper
When to use: When Dr. Scott makes his entrance and Brad exclaims “Great Scott!”. Get it? Like Scotts toilet paper? Yeah, that’s why people do it. Wait to toss it when Dr. Scott crashes through the wall. By the time Dr. Scott hits the Transducer wall and Frank has his leg on the chair it’s time to stop tossing.
Party Hat
When to use: During dinner, Frank will put on his party hat, and you should too. It’s a party after all and you should be dressed appropriately
Sponge
When to use: When Columbia is doing her “bitch out” speech and says to Frank, “You’re like a sponge!”
Cards
When to use: After floor show, when Frank is doing his solo number and sits down and sings the line “Cards for sorrow, cards for pain”. Make it rain!
